Introduction

Prayer before beginning of Mass

Eternal Father, I unite myself with the intentions and affections of our Lady of Sorrows on Calvary, and I offer Thee the Sacrifice which Thy beloved Son, Jesus, made of Himself on The Cross and which He now renews on this holy altar:

To adore Thee and give Thee the honor, which is due to Thee, confessing Thy supreme dominion over all things, and the absolute dependence of everything upon Thee, Who art our one and last End.

To thank Thee for innumerable benefits received.

To appease Thy justice, aroused against us by so many sins, and to make satisfaction for them.

To implore grace and mercy for myself, for ____, for Thy Holy Church, for all afflicted and sorrowing, for poor sinners, for all the world, and for the holy souls in Purgatory.

The Asperges

This prayer sung by the choir before the high (main Sunday) Mass.

Before the high Mass, and with a server on his left bearing the holy water, the priest, wearing a cope, comes to the foot of the altar, intoning the anthem, below, and sprinkles holy water on the altar 3 times, then on himself, then on the servers, and finally on the faithful.

Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.	Thou shalt sprinkle me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall become whiter than snow.
Misere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.[1]	Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy.
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.	Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

The Vide Aquam

The prayer is sung, instead of the Asperges, from Easter to WhitSunday (Paschaltime).

Vidi aquam egredientum de templo, a latere dextro, alleluia: et omnes ad quos pervenit aqua ista salvifactci dunt, et dicent: Alleluia, alleluia.	I saw water coming forth from the Temple on the right side, alleluia: and all those were saved to whom that water came, and they shall say: alleluia, alleluia.
Confitemini Domino, quoniam bouns: quoniam in seculum misericordia ejus.	Give praise to the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy endures forever.

The priest then retires to put on the vestments for the start of Mass.

The Judica Me[2]

(Omitted from Masses for the dead, and from Passion Sunday until Holy Saturday)

The priest genuflects at the foot of the altar, joins his hands, and the faithful kneel down.

P: Judica me, Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta: ab homine iniquo et doloso erue me.	Judge me, O God, and discern my cause from the unholy nation, rescue me from the unjust and deceitful man.
S: Quia tu es, Deus, fortitudo mea: quare me repulisti, et quare tristis incedo, dum affligit me inimicus?	For Thou, O God, art my strength, why hast Thou forsaken me? And why do I go about in sadness, while the enemy afflicts me?

The faithful make the Sign of The Cross as the priest here gives absolution:

The priest ascends the altar while praying, silently:

Aufer a nobis, quaesumus Domine, iniquitates nostras: ut ad Sancta Sanctorum puris mereamur mentibus introire. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Take away from us our iniquities; we beseech Thee, O Lord; that being made pure in heart we may be worthy to enter into the Holy of Holies. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kissing the altar at the place where the saint's relics are enclosed, at the middle of the altar, he says:

Oramus te. Domine, per merita Sanctorum tuorum, quorum reliquiae hic sunt et omnium Sanctorum: ut indulgere digneris omnia peccata mea. Amen

We beseech Thee, O Lord, by the merits of Thy Saints whose relics lie here, and of all the Saints: that Thou would vouchsafe to pardon me all my sins. Amen.

(At high Mass)

The priest blesses the incense:

Ab illo benedicaris, in cujus honore cremaberis. Amen.

Be blessed by Him in Whose honor thou art burnt. Amen.

He then incenses the altar, swinging the thurible or censer, containing the incense, away from himself. Then he gives it to the server/deacon who blesses him with the incense.

The Introit

The priest make the Sign of The Cross and reads the day's Introit, from the right, or 'Epistle', side of the altar.

The Kyrie Eleison

The Gloria in Excelsis

This Greater Doxology is omitted during Lent, Advent and Mass for the dead.

The priest stands at the middle of the altar, and says:

The server takes the altar missal from the right side of the altar and places it on the left, or Gospel, side, as the priest, bowing at the center of the altar, says silently:

Munda cor meum ac labia mea, omnipotens Deus, qui labia Isaiae Prophetae calculo mundasti ignito: ita me tua grata miseratione dignare mundare, ut sanctum Evangelium tuum digne valeam nuntiare. At high Mass, where the deacon sings the Gospel, this is said rather than that just above:

The faithful stand for the Holy Gospel.

The Homily

The Nicene Creed

After the Homily, the faithful stand, and the priest says:

Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorem coeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium. Et in unum Dominum Jesum Christum, Filium Dei unigenitum. Et ex Patre natum ante omnia saecula. I believe in one God, The Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only-begotten Son of God. Born of the Father before all ages. God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God. Begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father, by Whom all things were made. Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven.

Everyone genuflects during these words.

The priest kisses the altar, turns toward the faithful, and says:

The Offertory

The faithful sit down as the priest uncovers the chalice, then reads the offertory verse, after which the bell, , is rung once. He then takes the paten, in which the host is laid, and offers the host, saying:

Suscipe, sancte Pater, omnipotens aeterne Deus, hanc immaculatam hostiam, quam ego indignus famulus tuus offero tibi, Deo meo vivo et vero, pro innumerabilibus peccatis, et offensionibus, et negligentiis meis, et pro omnibus circumstantibus, sed et pro omnibus fidelibus christianis vivis atque defunctis: ut mihi, et illis proficiat ad salutem in vitam aeternam. Amen.

Accept, O Holy Father, almighty and eternal God, this spotless host, which I, Thy unworthy servant, offer unto Thee, my living and true God, to atone for my innumerable sins, offenses, and negligences, and for all here present; also for all faithful Christians both living and dead, that it may profit me and them for salvation unto life everlasting. Amen.

The priest makes the Sign of The Cross, here, with the paten, and then places the host on the corporal (square linen cloth). At the right side of the altar, he blesses the water, then mixes together the water and wine.

Deus, † qui humanae substantiae dignitatem mirabiliter condidisti, et mirabilius reformasti: da nobis per hujus aquae et vini mysterium, ejusdivinitatis esse consortes, qui humanitatis nostrae fieri dignatus est particeps, Jesus Christus Filius tuus Dominus noster: Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus: per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

O God, † Who, in creating human nature, did wonderfully dignify it, and still more wonderfully restored it, grant that by the Mystery of this water and wine, we may be made partakers of His divine nature, Who vouchsafed to be made partaker of our human nature, even Jesus Christ, our Lord, Thy Son: Who with Thee, lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God: world without end. Amen.

The priest offers the chalice.

P: Offerimus tibi, Domine, calicem salutaris tuam deprecantes clementiam: ut in conspectu divinae majestatis tuae, pro nostra et totius mundi salute com odore suavitatis ascendat. Amen.

We offer Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clemency, that it may ascend before Thy divine Majesty, as a sweet fragrance, for our salvation, and for that of the whole world. Amen.

The priest makes the Sign of The Cross with the chalice, places the chalice on the corporal, covers it with the pall (small square linen covered board), bows, and says:

In spiritu humilitatis, et in animo contrito suscipiamur a te, Domine, et sic fiat sacrificum nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie, ut placeat tibi, Domine Deus.

Accept us, O Lord, in our spirit of humility and contrition of heart, and grant that the sacrifice, which we offer this day in Thy sight, may be pleasing to Thee, O Lord God.

The priest lifts his eyes to Heaven, joins his hands and so makes the Sign of The Cross over both the host and wine, invoking The Holy Spirit by saying:

Veni, Sanctificator omnipotens aeterne Deus: et benedic † hoc sacrificum tuo sancto nomini praeparatum.

Come, O Sanctifier, Almighty and Eternal God, and bless † this sacrifice prepared for the glory of Thy holy Name.

Incensing the Offerings

(at solemn, high Mass)

The priest blesses the incense:

Per intercessionem beati Michaelis Archangeli, stantis a dextris altaris incensi, et omnium electorum suorum, incensum istud dignetur Dominus benedicere, † et in odorem suavitatis accipere. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Through the intercession of Blessed Michael the Archangel, standing at the right hand of the altar of incense, and of all His elect may the Lord vouchsafe to bless † this incense and to receive it in the odor of sweetness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The priest incenses the bread and wine:

Incensum istud a te benedictum, ascendat ad re, Domine, et descendat super nos misericordia tua.

May this incense blessed by You, arise before You, O Lord, and may Your mercy come down upon us.

The priest incenses the Crucifix, and the altar, saying:

Dirigatur, Domine, oratio mea sicut incensum in conspectu tuo: elevatio manuum mearum sacrificium vespertinum. Pone, Domine, custodiam ori meo, et ostium circumstantiae labiis meis: ut non declinet cor meum in verba malitiae, ad excsandas excusationes in peccatis. Accendat in nobis Dominus ignem sui amoris, et flammam aeterne caritatis. Amen.

Let my prayer, O Lord, come like incense before You; the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice. O Lord, set a watch before my mouth, a guard at the door of my lips. Let not my heart incline to the evil of engaging in deeds of wickedness. May the Lord enkindle in us the fire of His love and the flame of everlasting charity. Amen.

Washing of the Hands[3]

Lavabo inter innocentes manus meas: et circumdabo altare tuum, Domine. Ut audiam vocem laudis: et enarrem universa mirabila tua. Domine, dilexi decorem domus tuae: et locum habitationis gloriae tuae. Prayer to The Most Holy Trinity

Suscipe sancta Trinitas, hanc oblationem, quam tibi offerimus ob memoriam passionis, resurrectionis, et ascensionis Jesu Christi Domini nostri: et in monorem beatae Mariae semper Virginis, et beati Joannis Baptistae, et sanctorum Apostolorum Petri et Pauli, et N. (name of the Saint whose relics are in the Altar), et monium Sanctorum: ut illis proficiat ad honorem, nobis autem ad salutem: et illi pro nobis interceder e dignentur in coelis, quorum memoriam agimus in terris. Receive, most Holy Trinity, this oblation which we are making to Thee in remembrance of the Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and in honor of Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, Blessed John the Baptist, the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of ____ and of all the Saints; that it may avail unto their honor and our salvation, and may they vouchsafe to intercede in heaven for us who honor their memory here on earth. The Orate Frates

The priest kisses the altar, briefly turns toward the faithful, and says:

P: Orate fratres, et meum ac vestrum sacrificium acceptabile fiat apud Deum Patrem omnipotentem.	Pray brethren, that my Sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Father Almighty.
S: Suscipiat Dominus sacrificium de manibus tuis ad laudem et gloriam nominis sui, ad utilitatem quoque nostram, totiusque Ecclesiae suae sanctae. Amen.	The Lord receives the Sacrifice from your hands, to the praise and glory of His Name, to our benefit, and that of all His holy Church. Amen.
P: Amen.	Amen.

The Secret

The priest prays the Secret, inaudibly, and then says:

P: Per omnia saecula saeculorum.	World without end.
S: Amem.	Amen.

The Preface

Before the preface:

P: Dominus vobiscum.	The Lord be with you.
S: Et cum spiritu tuo.	And with thy spirit.
P: Sursum corda.	Lift up your hearts.
S: Habemus ad Dominum.	We have lifted them up to the Lord.
P: Gratias agamus Domino Deo nostro.	Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
S: Dignum et justum est.	It is meet and just.

The Sanctus

Following the Preface, everyone kneels, and the priest says:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts! Heaven and earth are filled with Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

Te Igitur

Bowing before the altar, the priest says, silently:

Te igitur, clementissime Pater, per Jesum Christum Filium tuum, Dominum nostrum, supplices rogamus ac petimus uti accepta habeas, et benedicas, haec † dona, haec † munera, haec † sancta sacrificia illibata; in primis quae tibi offerimu s pro Ecclesia tua sancta catholica; quam pacificare, custodire, adunare, et regere digneris toto orbe terrarum: una cum famulo tuo Papa nostro N., et Antistite nostro N. et omnibus orthodoxis, atque catholicae et apostolicae fidei cultoribus.

Commemoration of the Living

Hanc Igitur (Oblation of the Victim)

The priest spreads his hands over the oblation, says the first two words aloud , and continues silently:

Hanc igitur oblationem servitutis nostrae, sed et cunctae familiae tuae quaesumus, Domine, ut placatus accipias: diesque nostros in tua pace disponas, atque ab aeterna damnatione nos eripi, et in electorum tuorum jubeas grege numerari. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.	We therefore beseech Thee, O Lord, to graciously accept this oblation of our service, as also of Thy entire family; and to dispose our days in Thy peace, preserve us from eternal damnation, and count us in the number in Thine Elect. The Consecration of the Host

HOC EST ENIM CORPUS MEUM.

The priest kneels/genuflects to adore Our Lord.

He then stands and elevates Our Lord for the faithful to venerate and adore, each saying silently to themselves with faith, piety and love - My Lord and my God!

The priest places Our Lord on the corporal and kneels or genuflects, again, to adore Him.

The priest uncovers the chalice and continues:

Simili modo postquam coenatum est, accipiens et hunc praeclarum Calicem in sanctas ac venerabiles manus suas: item tibi gratias agens, † benedixit, deditque discipulis suis, dicens: Accepite, et bibite ex eo omnes,

In like manner, after He had supped, taking also this excellent chalice into His holy and venerable hands, and giving thanks to Thee, He blessed it, † and gave it to His disciples, saying: Take and drink ye all of this,

The Consecration of the Wine

HIC EST ENIM CALIX SANGUINIS MEI, NOVI ET AETERNI TESTAMENTI: MYSTERIUM FIDEI: QUI PRO VOBIS ET PRO MULTIS EFFUNDETUR IN REMISSIONEM PECCATORUM.	FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD OF THE NEW AND EVERLASTING TESTAMENT: THE MYSTERY OF FAITH: WHICH FOR YOU AND FOR MANY WILL BE SHED UNTO THE REMISSION OF SINS.
Haec quotiescumque feceritis, in mei memoriam facietis.	As often as you shall do these things, do them in memory of Me.

The priest kneels/genuflects to adore the Precious Blood, Our Lord.

He then stands and elevates the chalice for the faithful to venerate and adore.

The faithful may say, silently: "Be mindful, O Lord, of Thy creature, whom Thou hast redeemed by Thy most Precious Blood."

The priest sets the chalice down and kneels/genuflects, again, to adore Him.

Oblation of the Victim to God

Mindful, therefore, Lord, we, Thy servants, as also Thy holy people, of the same Christ, Your Son, our Lord, remember His blessed Passion, and also of His Resurrection from the dead, and finally of His glorious Ascension into heaven, offer unto Thy most excellent Majesty of Thine Own gifts, bestowed upon us, a pure Host (Victim), † a holy Host, † an unspotted Host, † the holy Bread † of eternal life and the chalice † of everlasting salvation. Deign to regard with gracious and serene countenance, and to accept them, as Thou was graciously pleased to accept the gifts of Thy just servant, Able, and the sacrifice of Abraham our Patriarch, and that which Thy chief priest Melchisedech offered to Thee, a holy Sacrifice, an unspotted Victim.

For Blessings

For the Dead
